10is Academy had a strong showing, winning three out of their four matches.
On Tuesday, the men's second team started their Cambs summer campaign with a tough loss to Needingworth. The team also suffered the loss of in-form player Richard, who sustained a knee injury and could be out of action for several months. Despite Richard and his partner Ed, winning their first three sets, captain Max and Chris failed to secure a single set, resulting in a 3-5 defeat.
However, the following day brought better news as the men's first team dominated in their Cambs league Division 6 match against Newmarket 3, winning all eight sets. Rhys and Jordan of Pair 1, and Seb and Tom of Pair 2, did not drop a single set.
On Sunday, the men's second team had a chance to redeem themselves in the National League Division 2 match against Cambourne 2 at home. Captain Max, Mish, Ed, and 16-year-old Sam took on the opponents, with Max and Mish winning both their singles and doubles and Ed winning his singles, resulting in a 4-2 win for the home team. The team showed strong performance and cohesion.
Earlier that day, the men's first team faced off against Cocks & Hens in the national league top division. The team was seeking their first win after a home defeat in the opening match against Cambridge LTC, but a slow start saw Rhys, captain Seb, Tom, and Jordan all lose their first sets but Rhys, Tom, and Seb fought back hard.
Rhys was up 5-3 when his opponent retired, while Seb and Tom won their second sets, giving the home team some hope. Tom was leading 4-1 in his final set but a lapse in form allowed his opponent to win the match. Captain Seb won a tough tiebreak in the final set to even the score at 2-2.
With Cocks & Hens unable to field a doubles pair due to injury, 10is Academy won one of their two doubles match by default. However, Tom and Seb were unable to secure a win, resulting in a final score of 3-3 overall.
The win had to be decided by a 10-point shootout tiebreak, which Seb and Jordan won with a strong performance.
Reflecting on the match, the team captain said, "It was a good match. We didn't play particularly well no badly, but we were solid. The result could have gone the other way, but today was our day."
10is Academy remains optimistic and looks forward to their future matches.
